Meet your Relief Vet

Dr. Jasmine Shoko Buccowich

Hi! I’m Dr. Jasmine Buccowich, a relief veterinarian based on Oʻahu, dedicated to delivering compassionate, high-quality care.

I spent part of my childhood on Oʻahu and always dreamed of returning to live near the tropical ocean. My love for marine life led me to earn a degree in Biology with a minor in Marine Biology from UC San Diego, followed by a Master’s in Biology, where I studied the patterns of whale songs. During that time, I also worked with native wildlife in California and gained valuable experience with the National Park Service. Being outdoors has always been a source of joy and inspiration for me.

After graduating in 2014, I finally made it back to Oʻahu. My first job on the island was as a snorkel guide for Japanese tourists at Hanauma Bay—it was such a fun and rewarding experience swimming everyday and practicing my Japanese.

Even though I explored other interests, I always knew that veterinary medicine was my true calling. I feel most fulfilled helping others understand how to best care for their beloved pets and it is a privilege to interact with so many different pet personalities every day. I returned to California and earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from UC Davis in 2020. Aside from those four years in school, Oʻahu has been my home ever since.

I’m incredibly grateful to be here and do what I love each day. I enjoy working with both dogs and cats—and I’m especially thankful to have overcome a severe cat allergy, which allowed me to welcome my first cat, Maizey, into my life. She’s named after (and perfectly color-matched with!) my soul dog, Cornflake. Cornflake, a sweet Oʻahu stray who found me in 2015, has been my greatest teacher in understanding animal behavior and anxiety. Her lessons continue to guide my gentle, empathetic approach to care.

In my practice, I focus on wellness exams, internal medicine, dermatology, and sick visits. I also have experience with urgent care and hospitalizations. To me, exceptional veterinary care means performing thorough exams, communicating clearly and openly, keeping organized and timely records, and working closely with the primary veterinarian. Most of all, I strive to create a calm, positive experience that reduces fear and stress for both pets and their people.

When I’m not caring for animals, you’ll find me outdoors—gardening, surfing, swimming, running, stand-up paddling, or reveling over a sunrise, sunset, and/or rainbow.
